People from Austin swear by Epoch Coffee. The 24/7 establishment serves a variety of coffee, iced drinks, and food items. I just finished eating a slice of pizza and a vanilla cupcake. Epoch’s food is fantastic. Patrons also offered positive reviews for Epoch’s drinks.
“Epoch has awesome Chai lattes,” said University of Texas student Stephane Mead. “I often find myself going there just to order that particular drink.”
Epoch Coffee, located at 221 W. North Loop Blvd., corners a mini shopping center that includes both vintage clothing and record stores. Epoch first entered the Austin coffee shop scene five years ago, said owner Chris. The owner would only disclose his first name.
Chris said he decided to open Epoch because he wanted to have a coffee shop where he could just enjoy himself and hang out. He said prior to opening Epoch, there wasn’t a coffee shop where he genuinely liked spending time at. A Starbucks sign behind the barista counter includes a profane slogan, clearly illustrating Chris’s sentiments.
The atmosphere within Epoch is quite homey and relaxed. The walls are painted in warm colors, which create an inviting environment for patrons. Local artists’ paintings decorate the walls. Different types of wooden chairs surround the tables, adding to Epoch’s quirkiness. Two patios offer space for people to work outside and enjoy the weather. Although slow, Epoch also provides free Wi-Fi.
A diverse crowd can be found at Epoch. I’m currently sitting next to middle schoolers listening to rap music. College students are working on a project behind me, and two middle-aged women are having a conversation in front of me.
Tables are hard to come by at Epoch’s, but that shouldn’t deter you from checking out this place. Be sure to come hungry and thirsty.
