I’ve found another South Austin treasure in Once Over Coffee Bar on South First Street. After reading many glowing reviews of the quality of their espresso drinks, my husband and I dropped in last Sunday to try out a couple of cappuccinos. We weren’t disappointed.
Parking was a bit of a challenge, as the lot out front is pretty small, but we lucked out and scored a spot. The shop’s interior is chic and modern, and a local photographer’s gorgeous images bedecked the walls. Customers who were in the know made a beeline out the back door to a simple but peaceful patio that overlooks Bouldin Creek.
The spousal unit and I each ordered a cappuccino and a bagel with cream cheese. It was a bit of a wait while our food and drinks were prepared, but that should be expected and welcomed at a quality coffee house. (Our wait was made all the livelier by the screaming toddlers who kept us company in line. Ah, the joys of coexisting alongside other people’s children. But this is no fault of the staff, and I digress.)
Once Over has a pretty limited food selection, but, unlike most other coffee shops in town, they allow outside food to be brought in. One Yelp reviewer pointed out that there’s a bakery, Sugar Mama’s, right up the street a bit. There’s also a taco stand right at the edge of Once Over’s parking lot.
Both the bakery and taco stand were closed when we visited around 9 a.m. Sunday, but our bagels were wonderful. Most importantly, the cappuccinos were delicious. It was clear that the quality of coffee was superb, and the baristas have the right idea when it comes to preparation.
Between the yummy coffee drinks and the creekside view, Once Over might be another excuse to venture down south more often.
