While obviously not a coffee house, the Tea Embassy is one of my favorite caffeine suppliers in Austin. Whether you’re a tea novice or a tea connoisseur, this shop undoubtedly has something that will delight you. Continue reading

Texas Coffee Traders: try something new thats perfect for you

by Zach Miller

Texas Coffee Traders is a great starting point to fine tune your tongue to the differences in beans across the globe. Owner RC cups different coffees every day to test and compare qualities of his beans. He does this in the middle of the shop and encourages whoever comes in to join the tasting and see what they think.

It will be very hard to get in and out of their shop without having coffee, because of the cuppings and the staffs willingness to brew you a latte as you walk in the door.

They roast beans, they brew coffee, they sell and repair brewing machines and devises. They are a wonderful hub for the Austin coffee community.

Here is a bit of the Texas Coffee Traders Philosophy.

Anderson Coffee Roasters: that little difference is everything.

by Zach Miller

I tried something new this week and shot video while at Anderson Coffee Roasters on Kerbey Lane. Serving coffee at only a dollar and nearly all their freshly roasted coffee beans at under $10, this place offers something that new and old coffee drinkers can appreciate.

Once Over Coffee Bar is worth a second look

Once Over Coffee Bar, Austin, Texas, baristas

The baristas at Once Over were working their buns off when I visited on a Sunday morning, but they were friendly as can be. Photo by Lara Berendt.

I’ve found another South Austin treasure in Once Over Coffee Bar on South First Street. After reading many glowing reviews of the quality of their espresso drinks, my husband and I dropped in last Sunday to try out a couple of cappuccinos. We weren’t disappointed. Continue reading

Coffee Shop Ratings

By Julie Bissinger

We thought it’d be a good idea to rate all of the coffee shops that we’ve tried.  Using a scale from 1-10, with 1 being poor and 10 being excellent, we rated each coffeehouse based on four categories:  atmosphere, coffee, food and service.  We also calculated an overall rating by averaging each of the four categories together.

The overall highest rated coffee shops include:  Mozart’s Coffee Roasters (9.5), Houndstooth Coffee (9.2) and Apothecary Cafe & Wine Bar (9.2).

The chart is a bit different from other rating visuals. We chose to use a bubble chart, which depicts higher rated coffeehouses in larger bubbles and lower rated places in smaller bubbles.

Thunderbird on Koenig, beer specials! plus good coffee too

A little clipping next to the Thunderbird register I found funny.

by Zach Miller

OK, I have to say when I arrived at Koenig Thunderbird cafe at 5:30 on a Thursday I was in no way craving anything hot or caffeinated. The 90 degree weather was wearing me thin and something else at this coffee shop sounded way more palatable.

Thunderbird offers daily beer specials.

Beer! For a dollar! Huzzah!
